It even gets its name from the French phrase l’arbre de vie or tree of life. But don’t let that stop you from experimenting with different lavender cultivars to see what grows best in your garden. Just keep in mind that a formal garden should use fewer varieties for a more uniform look, while a country or potager garden can use more. The main residential building (usually a palace or chateau) is the centerpiece of the garden. Paths radiate from the house with a central axis providing the main path.

Provencal style gardens overflow with color and have a charming wildness to them, but also incorporate the same elements of stone, boxwood, and water features. Dorota is an economist by profession, but her biggest hobby is photography and interior design. Keep in mind that designing a good-looking French garden is not as easy as it seems. That’s why you should read a lot about this topic in search for an inspiration, or ask an expert to carry out the project for you. Wattles are so incredibly easy to make, it’s amazing to me that everyone doesn’t already have them.

Wild birds will enjoy using their sheltered branches for building nests. The French enjoy spending time in their gardens – it is part of la vie quotidien. Relaxing by the swimming pool or reading under a tree are moments to savor and enjoy in solitude or with company. An afternoon siesta on a comfortable sun lounge is the ultimate summer ritual! Creating shade is essential for the hot months - umbrellas and trees will provide shade cover and if there is a fountain nearby, this will have a cooling effect too.

Plants that are native to the area naturally will thrive and look most harmonious in the landscape. These plants also will provide sought-after nourishment to bees, butterflies, and other local insects. Living and working in Southern California, artist/designer Laura Morton, FAPLD, creates gardens and outdoor spaces that transcend daily life. Situated conveniently next to the 101 freeway in Carpinteria, California, Eye of the Day offers a large selection of pottery, planters, fountains, statuary, and garden design accessories. Feel free to add cushions and pillows as these small touches bring comfort and style to your seating areas, making them even more enticing. Arrange the furniture strategically, taking advantage of shaded spots or positioning it near beautiful focal points within your garden. In addition to flowers and herbs, don’t forget to include perennial favorites that thrive in the French landscape. It’s all about the layout—the carefully orchestrated arrangement of pathways, focal points, and garden rooms that define the space. There are other highly famous gardens in France, such as the enchanting Giverny garden, which takes on a more informal style. Continuing our exploration into the world of French country gardens, let’s find inspiration from the magnificence of well-known French gardens.

A grand, classical fountain can serve as a stunning centerpiece, exuberantly displaying the beauty of flowing water. While an elegantly crafted sculpture can effortlessly capture attention, accentuating the overall design aesthetic and creating a sense of artistic cohesion. If you wander around most French gardens, you’ll find an heirloom rose.

Choose a set made from classic materials such as wrought iron or wrought aluminum, complementing the overall aesthetic of your French-inspired design. Crushed gravel pathways offer a rustic and natural element, blending seamlessly with the surrounding greenery and soil. They provide a soft and porous surface that allows for natural drainage and prevents water from accumulating, offering functionality and practicality.

These meticulously sculpted shrubs or trees (like yew, boxwood, myrtle, and juniper) originated in Roman times, but soon became essential to French design. While Richard Smith's convivial country home may be located high above the English Channel, elements of French style can be seen throughout the home's verdant grounds. A labyrinth of hornbeam hedges conceals antique treasures such as this cast-stone urn.

Potager gardens are vegetable gardens, with the emphasis on providing fresh, seasonal ingredients by just stepping out of one’s door. At one point, every French house with garden space would have some kind of potager. Garden beds are redone frequently as the seasons turn from spring to summer to fall. Like a country garden, you’ll use many of the same principles as a formal garden, so you can add one seamlessly within a formal or country garden. You can also intermingle ornamental plants with your vegetables and herbs.

In this article, we’ll explore the art of designing a stunning French country garden, from the layout ideas to the choice of plants and even the perfect furniture. Another possibility is to use the formal parterre structure but soften it by planting with an informal display of plants and flowers. This approach is used in the parterres of the Chateau du Lude in North West France. At their simplest the parterres can be filled with coloured gravel or sand.

This frost-proof Italian terracotta pottery, made from Galestro clay and fired at high temperatures, is notable for its quality and durability. If you love rustic touches, it’s now time to embrace the charm of weathered elements and vintage accents. If there’s one feature that can truly enhance the serene and romantic ambiance of a French country garden, it’s the presence of a beautiful fountain. Delicate hellebores, vibrant peonies, and graceful delphiniums are just a few examples of plants that can add height, movement, and lasting beauty to your outdoor sanctuary.

Using symmetrically arranged flowerbeds with paths in between is a perfect option for you. Stone is also used for more than decorative elements and often makes up the all-important terrace where one can enjoy the view of the whole design. When incorporating water elements, stone coping encloses pools and fountains. That was the first time I realized that some people treated gardening as a pleasure rather than a chore. The French gardeners I met weren’t just keeping shrubs trimmed and relentlessly mowing the lawn the way we did back home. They were cultivating relationships with beloved plants and the landscape around them in their stunningly beautiful French gardens.

How to Shave Your Armpits: Tips, Best Practices, Precautions

The non-binary actor opened up in 2017 about being bisexual and not confirming to social constructs. "[I want to] show people who follow what I'm doing that you don't really have to conform to those constructs in order to be valid or be worth something," Stenberg told PEOPLE. "It's been such a blessing to watch people who care about what I have to say feel more comfortable in their identities because they see I'm out here doing my thing." Miley sent the Internet wild in 2015 when she revealed her grown-out underarm hair on Instagram. Then she followed up on the excitement by documenting the process of dyeing her pit hair a few weeks later. In an April interview and photo shoot with Bustle, Rachel McAdams asked the outlet to only minimally retouch her photos, letting her armpit hair be on full display, as well as her real curves.

Luckily, the armpits' somewhat concealed nature provides a bit of safety for experimentation. To grow out your armpit hair, simply ditch the razor, wax strips or hair removal cream and allow it to grow naturally. Look to deodorant brands like Nuud – its deodorants come in a tube and contain micro silver to neutralise bacteria, preventing excess odour-trapping. To keep hair soft, supple and healthy, look to body hair brand Fur, whose Fur Oil (designed for the pubic area, but it works just as well on underarms) can help, and also ensures healthy, hydrated skin thanks to vitamins E, D, and C. It also contains antibacterial clary sage to keep the area in top nick.

How to shave your armpits

There are also some benefits that come with shaving armpit hair. For one, shaving the armpits can make one swell less, since hair holds moisture. This is known as hyperhidrosis, which makes a person excessively sweat in their armpits, feet, and hands.

Armpit hair can prevent skin tags.

According to an old 1988 research review, studies of competitive swimmers who shaved body hair showed improvement in performance times. For example, sweat can make underarm hair itchy and lead to odor. Corrin proudly sported their armpit hair on the cover of Vogue’s August 2022 issue in a Louis Vuitton tank dress.

"When you shave, you can get irritation, folliculitis, rashes, inflammation, and even infections from dirty razors," Dr. Mona Gohara told the outlet. She added that there is no "biological reason to remove that hair." Since giving birth to her son in January, Ashley Graham has been documenting the realities of postpartum life on social media. In many of the pictures she’s sporting underarm hair, no comment needed. Meanwhile Emma Corrin, who is to play Princess Diana in the forthcoming series of The Crown, recently posted a series of shots, arms up, armpit hair out. In 2017, Paris Jackson took to her Instagram to share with her followers that she had been growing out her armpit hair for the previous two months.

Why Armpit Hair?

For clarity I’m referring to ordinary men, not male models or men who show off their body in public and might want a hairless image. If someone comments on her appearance, I’m sure it won’t be the first time she has heard it. Simply explain calmly that Meadow is there because she’s family. (It’s the truth.) As to her upstaging your son’s bride, that won’t happen if Meadow is seated at a distance from the altar. He is in the business world and is very professional in his manner and dress. They were close as kids but haven’t seen much of each other in adulthood.

In an Instagram post, Stenberg pointed out the hair writing, "#drama #armpit." Previously, Lourdes made an unexpected catwalk appearance on the Gypsy Sport runway in September 2018 wearing a very risqué outfit that exposed her unshaven legs. She modeled seashell pasties with several seashell-adorned body chains and high-waisted underwear, which peeked out above her low-rise tattered jeans that showed off most of her leg hair.

"People are really mad. I wish I could post some of these responses," she said when she addressed the haters on her Instagram Story. "My daughter (and every other person for that matter) deserves to live in a world where they can exist in their natural body without feeling disgusting," she wrote alongside the snap. The actress, who was on hand to promote her latest movie Are You There God?

In 1999, Julia Roberts didn’t shave for the premiere of Notting Hill (she later said she “forgot”). On her Instagram account, Girls actor Jemima Kirke often shows an unshaved armpit. And before you argue about the smell that people think come with hairy armpits, she says that it’s a complete myth that having hairy underarms increases sweating or odor. You’ll still have your usual levels of sweat and odor, so you should apply deodorant or antiperspirant however you like. “Think about [the average] men who don’t shave their armpits and all of the antiperspirants and deodorants that target them.

Equally radical were two of the latter decade's biggest rule breakers, Madonna and Lisa Bonet, who each tossed the razor with aplomb. According to the research firm Mintel’s 2023 UK Shaving and Hair Removal Market report, 55% of UK consumers – so women and men – have removed body hair from their underarms in the previous 12 months. Women tend to bring the average up, with statistics that have barely changed in the past 50 years. An op-ed in the New York Times in 1974 reported that 98% of US women shaved their armpits and legs. Conservative estimates suggest that figure is largely unchanged.

The star casually shared a few photos of her lounging in the water in a colorful flower-printed bikini and rectangle sunglasses, signaling that everyone has body hair and it's OK not to remove it. Getting candid about life as a new mom and postpartum recovery, the model shared an empowering photo of her body a few weeks after welcoming her first child Isaac Menelik Giovanni Ervin with husband Justin Ervin. In a black tank and gray disposable underwear, Graham snapped a bathroom selfie with her arm raised — also flaunting her grown-out armpit hair. Aside from this, armpit hair also reduces friction as it prevents skin-to-skin contact during some activities, such as walking or running.

Having a high blood sugar (glucose) level may make the symptom more noticeable. If you have itchy armpits as a result of cancer or cancer treatment, talk to your healthcare provider about your symptom and they may recommend a different treatment to alleviate your discomfort. Itchy armpits are a common irritation that happens when you have the urge to scratch your skin. Treatment could include taking medications, changing deodorants, managing any underlying conditions or maintaining proper hygiene. But this long overdue shift in society’s ideals has a precedent in the stars who bucked body hair conventions during decades past.

For example, hair grows in our armpits to help keep the heat in, so if you live in cold areas — or you’re smack dab in the middle of a polar vortex — that’s good news,” Caruana notes. In addition to reducing friction, not shaving your armpit hair can prevent certain issues. By leaving the armpit hair intact, you’re helping trap odor, since moisture (sweat) attaches to hair. Armpit hair is a natural part of getting older; many people tend to see armpit hair as they go through puberty. However, you may left wondering if you should shave your armpit hair—whether you're comfortable with having it or not. When Moschino shared a photo of Cardi B wearing a crop top after performing at the Grammys in 2018, a few fans unnecessarily made some comments about the rappers stomach hair.

Another star who has been vocal against society’s obsession with hairless bodies, Hoffman attended the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards with armpit hair in full sight. She went on to encourage her fans to be more considerate of those who embrace their body hair. She responded with a post of clean-shaven legs, writing that she didn't intend on making a statement; instead, she was just feeling lazy. "Tbh, I prefer being shaven but often prioritize other things over it."

For best results, it’s important to know the right and wrong way to shave. Graham has been a huge proponent of going au naturel and even partnered with skin care brand Flamingo in 2021 to celebrate the armpit bush. The cellist and singer often keeps her hair in the underarm area and even starred in & Other Stories’s For Women, By Women campaign showcasing the full armpit bush. At the 2002 premiere of Enough, Lewis walked the red carpet in a ruffled plunging neckline tank top that showed off the fuzz in her pits. Of course, we’d be remiss not to mention America’s sweetheart. Roberts greeted the crowd at the Notting Hill premiere—and sent shock waves through the industry—with unapologetic thickets of underarm growth in 1999.

In the accompanying essay, she explained that hair removal is a personal choice for all people. Choosing to shave your underarms is really a personal decision. In most cases, there aren’t any medical benefits to shaving, but some people just prefer the smooth hair-free look or feel. Diabetes can affect several parts of your body, including your skin. Underarm Hair Is Back – Here’s Why

For me, this decision was not explicitly about feminism, but about an allegiance to my idea of authenticity (not to mention my allegiance to laziness). It wasn’t that I didn’t care how I looked; I wanted to look like I didn’t care how I looked. I wanted to be attractive, but I did not want to invest effort or enlist artifice into making myself so. Any such measures, to my 16-year-old mind, would have been cheating.

What types of cancer cause itchy armpits?

Many Instagram influencers have posted pictures, proudly showing their ungroomed armpit hair. Some of them have even begun dying their armpit hair, receiving plenty of praise and criticism for inventing new beauty standards in the process. Of course we'd be remiss not to mention America’s sweetheart Julia Roberts, who greeted the crowd at the Notting Hill premiere—and sent shock waves through the industry—with unapologetic thickets of underarm growth in 1999. Or Lola Kirke, who took the 2017 Golden Globes red carpet with visible, sweetheart-neckline-adjacent body hair. As more celebrities publicly transcend the gender binary, beauty standards are thankfully broadening. But this long overdue shift in society's standards of beauty has a precedent in the stars who bucked body hair conventions during decades past.

Recent years have brought about massive improvements in at-home hair-removal products and devices, such as at-home hair removal lasers, making underarm hair removal easier and even—shockingly—kind of pleasant. "Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment of the hair follicle to help destroy the hair follicle and as a result, reduce hair growth," explains Garshick. Sure, you don’t have to exfoliate, but you should to avoid pesky, painful ingrown hairs. A loofah or exfoliating body scrub will do the trick to remove dead skin cells and bacteria (along with any deodorant gunk) to help you achieve the smoothest shave without razor burn. During the 1960s, along with blue jeans and a little light drug use, women’s hairy underarms were markers of political consciousness and female liberation.

If you feel a lump in your armpit, it may be a sign of an underlying condition like an infection or cancer. Contact a healthcare provider if you have a lump in your armpit. Bridgers’s Rodarte halter dress allowed for her armpit hair to shine through at the 2023 iHeartRadio Awards.

Shaving

"The main difference between IPL and laser hair removal devices is the light source used," Tobia shares. Although IPL treatments are usually quicker than lasering for underarm hair removal, IPL typically requires more treatments for successful hair removal than lasering does. "While the devices for at-home laser hair removal are designed to be safe for at-home use, it is important to remember there is a risk of burn or discoloration if not used correctly." In spite of that persisting stigma, more and more women are choosing to embrace their armpit hair. Part of this is because it's just easier to have one less step in your beauty routine, but it's also about body hair positivity and empowerment. "If I decide to shave my armpits or grow them out, that's up to me," wrote actress and model Emily Ratajkowski in Harper's Bazaar.

Common signs of ingrown armpit hair

Tired of sweating excessively or dealing with sweat stains on your clothes? Shaving your armpits can help since hair actually holds onto moisture. This is because the armpits release an odor containing pheromones, a naturally-producing chemical that plays a role in sexual attraction. Here, a look back at all the renegades who might just inspire you to go au naturale with your underarm hair. In October 2018, Stenberg showed up to the London premiere of their film, "The Hate U Give," wearing a sleeveless black gown, not bothering one bit to shave or remove the hair under their arms — and we're here for it.

armpit with hair

Interestingly, a 2018 study covering 96 couples discovered that some stress-relieving benefits could be yielded from smelling the natural scent of a person. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2016 supports Caruana's recommendation of waxing over shaving. Armpit hair, also referred to as axillary hair, gets its start from puberty.

Back in 2013, Paltrow attended a red carpet event wearing a sheer dress that she ended up having to go commando for. She opened up about what the experience was like a few days later during an appearance on Ellen. In 2019, Emily Ratajkowski posed for a Harper's Bazaar cover where she showed fans her armpit hair.

Oui the People's rose gold razor ($55) is non-irritating and an undeniably beautiful addition to your bathroom shelfie. "While waxing may be a little uncomfortable, it can provide a longer lasting hair removal option compared to shaving," says Garshick. Waxing works for all skin tones and hair types, and with repeated use, it can make underarm hair more manageable. "Over time, waxed hairs grow back softer and thinner, which can help you spread out the time between hair removal," Tobia explains. Alongside the over-the-top makeup trends goes the liberating natural beauty trend. And believe it or not, hairy women, or hairy armpits to be exact, is the new it.

If you have an ingrown hair that becomes infected, you’ll need to treat the infection as well as the ingrown hair itself. Infected ingrown hairs can become painful, hard, and filled with pus. The surrounding area may also become red and warm to the touch. Coarse or curly hair is more prone to becoming ingrown than fine, straight hair. Ingrown hairs tend to crop up anywhere you shave, tweeze, or wax, including your armpits.

The Competition

The airplane must be able to conduct a delivery flight, a medical transport flight, and an urban taxi flight. Teams also conducted a ground mission demonstrating how quickly they can change their aircraft configuration from delivery to medical transport to urban air taxi. This year's flight objective was to design, build, and test a remotely operated radio control airplane for Urban Air Mobility. The AIAA Design Build Fly competition challenges student teams to design and fabricate a radio controlled, electric-powered aircraft to meet a specified mission profile. This competition aims to provide real-world aircraft design experience for engineering students by giving them the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to a practical problem.

University of Washington

Teams from 12 countries, including 32 US states participated in the full DBF Competition, including submitting design reports and attending the flyoff. This year’s contestants had to complete a written report, a ground mission and three flights. The first flight required completing a mission of three laps around the course with no added weight. The second mission required flying the same distance with a circular, rotating radome as the payload.

Design/Build/Fly Competition

AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) DBF (Design Build Fly) is an international engineering competition. Each year, student teams field aircraft for a set of complex missions and compete against each other for the highest score. Through this competition, students gain real-world aircraft design experience. Students working with the team will develop skills with products that will carry over to their professional careers. DBF gives students the opportunity to explore a variety of disciplines within aeronautics and apply what they learn in classes in a setting similar to that of industry. Each year, 300+ teams worldwide submit their design reports- about a third of them are invited to the international flyoff, and even fewer successfully complete all three missions.

Featured Events

Being robotic systems with dozens of moving parts, each aircraft draws from every facet of engineering, including aerospace, mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines. Expertise in business operations keeps our 40+ member team running, while competitive intelligence helps us find new advantages. Model aviators from all majors pitch in to design, build, and fly our aircraft for tests and competitions. Embry-Riddle defeated the biggest field in the history of the AIAA event — 93 teams from 13 countries including the United States. Clouds, temperatures in the low 40s and wind gusts of 37 kph on Saturday caused a few teams to crash their aircraft, but Sunday provided nearly ideal flying conditions with a light breeze.

For the third mission, teams competed to drop the most plastic darts within 10 minutes, a drill designed to simulate the release of bombs called attack stores. The ground mission required demonstrating installation of the radome and attack stores and activating both remotely. Students are required to keep up with changing technologies and mission requirements as the aerospace industry advances. Recent mission requirements have included increased focus on fuel efficiency, environmental sustainability, and electric propulsion.

With 785 students participating on 77 teams, this year’s event was the largest DBF to date. University of Washington in Seattle took third place with a $1,500 award, flying with 75 dolls and completing the ground mission in just under three minutes. Even before the competition was over, some teams were already planning for next year.

The first flight, Mission 1, consisted of flying two dolls that represented crew members. In Mission 2, the teams completed a medical transport flight, loading their planes with additional dolls that represented emergency medical personnel and a patient. In Mission 3, they were free to carry as many passenger dolls as they chose to simulate the flight of an electric air taxi. In the ground mission, they were scored on how quickly they swapped their aircraft between the medical transport and passenger configurations. This year’s flight objective was to design, build, and test a remotely operated radio control airplane for Urban Air Mobility.

To encourage innovation and maintain a fresh design challenge for each new year’s participants, the design requirements and performance objective will be updated for each new contest year. The changes will provide new design requirements and opportunities, while allowing for application of technology developed by the teams from prior years. University of Southern California won a $100 prize for best design paper submitted prior to the fly-off event, and also won the Stan Powell Memorial Award for the team that showed it learned the most. Though USC started the fly-off event in first place, it failed to complete one of the flights. Competition rules vary annually, switching between humanitarian and military themes.

The Edward Rusjan Team from the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia made their remotely controlled plane out of carbon fiber composites to keep the weight down. The contest fly-off is scheduled for 18–21 April 2024, in-person in Wichita, Kansas.

Rules typically release in late September, with the final fly-off in April. A mathematical formula outlined in the rules calculates each entry's score, which lately combines design report and performance scores from fly-off missions. Teams are required to submit the proposal and team rosters via the online submission system. Proposals and team rosters are due by 5 pm (1700) US Eastern Time on 31 October. The proposals will be scored as defined in the proposal requirements section. The top 110 proposals plus ties will be invited to submit design reports and potentially become eligible for the fly-off. Teams will be notified no later than 17 November if their proposal has been accepted or not.

From the "womb to tomb" of each competition, we do everything from preliminary design, to CAD modeling, to prototyping and flight testing in fewer than 7 months. “When we got here and crashed out, we were able to build a whole new plane and get out on the flight line the same day,” said team member Jasper Bossett. The Ljubljana team took an early lead at the end of Friday’s flights at TIMPA, the Tucson International Modelplex Park Association Airfield.

See how students are winning competitions worldwide with MATLAB and Simulink. Teams also had to show they could park their planes in a space just 2.5 feet (76 centimeters) wide, which required most of them to fold their wings. University of Central Florida won $100 for the best parking configuration. Embry-Riddle students can become a member of the DBF team by joining our roster.

Teams can use MATLAB and Simulink to design and validate their aircraft as well as simulate mission profiles. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Design Build Fly (AIAA DBF) competition is an annual aircraft design competition. Each year students are tasked with designing, building, and flying unmanned, electric powered, remote control aircraft.
